CHAPTER 2: Unfamiliar Beginnings – You Are Mine

Emily awoke to the unfamiliar surroundings of a grand room, her mind foggy with confusion. The opulent decor, reminiscent of a VIP suite at ‘Rex,’ disoriented her for a moment. She blinked, trying to make sense of where she was. The thought that she might be in a suite at ‘Rex’ crossed her mind, but it was quickly dispelled as she noticed the unfamiliar clothes on her body. Panic surged through her. She had always guarded her innocence fiercely, and the thought of someone violating her boundaries was terrifying. …..You Are Mine

She dashed into the bathroom, her heart pounding, and examined herself thoroughly. Relief washed over her as she realized she was unharmed, except for the unfamiliar clothes. As she stepped out of the bathroom, the door opened, and a maid entered. It wasn’t Meddy; Emily remembered that Meddy had fallen ill after seeing her the previous night. This villa had ten servants, five men and five women, with Meddy as their supervisor.

“Good morning, Madam. Sir has asked me to bring your breakfast,” the maid said respectfully, wheeling in a cart laden with porridge, boiled eggs, apple slices, and juice. “Since you’ve just recovered from a fever, the doctor has recommended light food. There are clothes in this bag for you,” she added, placing a bag on the table before leaving quietly.

Emily sat on the couch, her mind racing. The maid’s kindness was puzzling. She recalled the events of the previous night: the rain, the offer of a ride from her boss, Christopher Hues. The realization that she was in Christopher’s home sent a chill down her spine. She quickly finished her breakfast and changed into the clothes the maid had brought, then hurried to leave. ……You Are Mine

As she tried to sneak out, the maid caught up with her. “Madam, I forgot to tell you that Sir has said you can leave only after Dr. Mark Pattison gives his permission. He’s on his way and should be here soon,” the maid explained.

Emily sighed and returned to the living room. Her eyes wandered over the decor, and she subconsciously evaluated it based on her studies in interior design. The room felt distinctly masculine, with dull-colored walls, plain wooden furniture, and no feminine touches. If she had the chance, she would transform it into a vibrant, lively space. ….You Are Mine

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a male voice. She looked up to see a handsome man with a medical bag. “Hello, Miss…?” he began, stretching the word ‘miss’.

“Emily Hook. You can call me Emily,” she replied with a smile.

“Mark Pattison, your physician,” he said, taking out a thermometer to check her temperature. “Your temperature is normal, but you’re still weak. I’m prescribing some medicine and supplements. Take them on time,” he advised.

“Thank you,” Emily nodded.

“Miss Emily, may I ask you a personal question?” Mark inquired politely.

“Sure, go ahead,” she replied softly.

“Have we met before? I feel like we’ve met earlier,” he said.

“I don’t recall ever meeting you. I’m an outsider here in A City. I’ve been here for only nine months,” she explained.

“Oh… Where are you from?” he asked, extending the conversation.

“I’m from a small city in Z Country. I came here for higher studies,” she said.

“Since you’re new here, let’s be friends,” Mark said, extending his hand.

“Okay,” Emily hesitated before shaking his hand. “Thank you for your kindness. I should go now,” she said, heading towards the gate.

“Wait, let me drive you. And please, call me Mark,” he insisted.

Emily agreed, and Mark drove her to the hostel. Along the way, he asked many questions about her past, to which she responded spontaneously. Mark found no inconsistencies in her answers. …………You Are Mine

As soon as Emily left, Mark’s phone rang. He knew the caller and answered in a serious tone, “You’ve already heard the entire conversation. She’s really someone else.”

“Did I ask for your opinion?” Christopher retorted coldly.

“If you don’t care about my opinion, why did you ask me to interrogate her?” Mark asked, annoyed.

“Enough. Your task is done. Go back to your work and don’t try to meet or call her on purpose,” Christopher warned.

“You’re good at burning bridges. I won’t call her or meet her on purpose, but I can’t ignore her if she tries to find me. We did exchange numbers,” Mark teased.

“Block her number. I won’t say it twice,” Christopher’s voice turned dangerous. …….You Are Mine

“Ahem… Chris, I’m not getting your voice. Maybe it’s a network issue. Let’s talk later,” Mark quickly ended the call and switched off his phone.

“Damn this guy. He’s really heartless. But what a pity. She’s not Alice. If she were, maybe Christopher could finally move on and stop living in the past,” Mark muttered to himself.
